I got support in what I was doing, but it was always down to me. I never felt any pressure from my parents at all. When I was competing, I never felt that I was competing for anyone else other than myself.

The Springboks had gathered in town to prepare for their tour of Europe, following their readmittance to international rugby earlier that year.
