How did MacIntyre attempt to remain true to the spirit of Trotskyism in the early 1960s? Knight suggests that his position at this juncture involved him embracing dogma. Unsurprisingly, MacIntyre did not understand his allegiance to Marxism in such terms. Rather, as is readily apparent from his review of Lucien Goldmann’s The Hidden God, his Marxism involved not a dogmatic faith in the working class, but, rather, a wager on its potential. 68 Goldmann, whose book is centrally concerned with the ‘tragic vision’ of Pascal and Racine, noted three periods when a form of the tragic vision became the dominant motif of the age: the moments of Sophocles, Shakespeare, and finally Pascal, Racine and Kant.
By contrast, Cliff insisted that it was nonsense to suggest that a workers’ state could be realised without a workers’ revolution. 60 According to Alex Callinicos, Cliff’s theory of bureaucratic state capitalism afforded his Marxism a number of advantages over orthodox Trotskyism in the post-war period. First, in characterising the Soviet social formation’s capitalism through its military competition with the West, Cliff was able to lay the basis for a powerful theory of the post-war boom: a theory of the ‘permanent arms economy’.
Where MacIntyre quotes from works which were only subsequently translated into English, such as Sartre’s L’Être et le néant or Marx’s Grundrisse, he has used the standard English translation. He has only made references to non-English editions either where the work concerned has not been translated or the translated version is now completely inaccessible. MacIntyre tended to make reference to writings by other people in four different ways. (i) Complete references. These were infrequent. Their rare appearances tended to occur in journal articles written towards the end of the period covered by these essays and to take the form of footnotes.
